NATO to boost Baltic Sea presence after Eagle S cable damage

NATO will strengthen its military presence in the Baltic Sea after the damage to the Estlink 2 power cable and four internet cables, Secretary General Mark Rutte said, according to Reuters. Finland has seized the tanker Eagle S, suspected of dragging its anchor across the cables, and its customs service believes the ship belongs to an ageing fleet carrying Russian oil in breach of sanctions. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said it was too early to conclude that Russia was behind the damage. Estonia sent naval forces to protect the Estlink 1 cable. Repairs to Estlink 2 are expected to take until 1 August 2025.
