Eagle S operation cost Finland almost €1.4 million as defence seeks Supreme Court appeal, Yle reports
Seizing the oil tanker Eagle S and investigating the Gulf of Finland cable damage cost the Finnish state almost €1.4 million in police costs, Finnish broadcaster Yle reports, citing an Interior Ministry document. About 80% was overtime and working-time compensation, as the December 2024 operation fell over the Christmas holidays, according to Yle. The broadcaster says the Helsinki Court of Appeal overturned the district court's finding that it lacked jurisdiction and returned the case to it. Prosecutors are seeking prison terms of at least two and a half years for the captain and two officers for aggravated sabotage and aggravated interference with telecommunications. On 27 October the defence said it would seek leave to appeal to the Supreme Court.
