Finland charges Eagle S captain and officers over Christmas Day cable damage

Finland's deputy prosecutor general charged the Georgian captain and two Indian officers of the tanker Eagle S with aggravated criminal mischief and aggravated interference with communications, The Maritime Executive reports. Prosecutors say the Cook Islands-flagged ship, which had left Ust-Luga, dragged its anchor for about 90 kilometres on 25 December 2024, damaging five cables between Finland and Estonia; repairs cost over €60 million. The defendants deny the charges and dispute Finland's jurisdiction, saying the damage happened outside its territorial waters.
