Mexico steps up fuel shipments to Cuba as Venezuelan and Russian supplies dwindle

Mexico has become Cuba's key fuel supplier as deliveries from Venezuela and Russia fall away, the Associated Press reports. About 412,000 barrels of Pemex crude reached the port of Cienfuegos, with a further 67,000 barrels of diesel bound for Santiago de Cuba, cargoes worth around $31 million. According to tanker-tracking data compiled by Jorge Piñon of the University of Texas at Austin, Mexico has sent at least $300 million of fuel since early 2023. Venezuelan shipments have largely dried up, and a 119,000-barrel Russian cargo in September was the first in months. "Russian oil it's nowhere to be seen," Piñon told AP. Cuba faces island-wide blackouts.
