Tankers Hafnia Nile and Ceres I catch fire after collision off Singapore Strait
The Singapore-flagged product tanker Hafnia Nile and the VLCC Ceres I collided at about 06:00 local time on 19 July, some 30 nautical miles north-east of Pedra Branca at the entrance to the Singapore Strait, and both caught fire, Maritime Executive reports. All 22 crew of Hafnia Nile, which was carrying 300,000 barrels of naphtha from Spain to Japan, were safe. The 40 crew of Ceres I were also safe, with two taken to hospital. Maritime Executive says Ceres I, a Chinese-owned tanker registered in Sao Tome and Principe, has a long history of carrying Iranian and Venezuelan crude in breach of sanctions and had altered its AIS transmissions.
