Estonia detains stateless tanker Kiwala with 40 deficiencies
Estonian authorities detained the oil tanker Kiwala in Muuga Bay on 11 April after an inspection found 40 deficiencies, 29 of them serious, the Estonian Transport Administration said. The ship claimed to fly Djibouti's flag, but Djibouti had withdrawn it, so it entered the Gulf of Finland without a valid flag certificate. The administration says the tanker is under EU, UK, Canadian and Swiss sanctions and may not sail until the problems are fixed and it is re-inspected. Its maritime director said safety could not be guaranteed.
