UK sanctions up to 100 shadow fleet tankers in its largest package against the fleet

Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced sanctions on up to 100 oil tankers at a Joint Expeditionary Force meeting in Oslo, in what the UK called its largest package against Russia's shadow fleet. The government says the ships have carried more than $24 billion of cargo since the start of 2024. It argues such unseaworthy vessels threaten undersea infrastructure and the environment by sailing without proper certification or by disabling tracking. Those behind the fleet were also to be targeted.
