Puntland police free US-sanctioned tanker Sibu 1 from Somali pirates
The Eritrea-flagged tanker Sibu 1 has been freed and its captors detained, a commander of the Puntland Maritime Police Force told Reuters. Six armed men seized the ship on 20 August, according to UK Maritime Trade Operations. The US Treasury sanctioned the vessel in December for its alleged part in a shadow fleet moving Iranian petroleum products. Piracy off Somalia has picked up again in recent months.
