Bellona counts 100 sanctioned vessels on the Northern Sea Route in 2025
Sanctioned vessels made up nearly a third of ships on Russia's Northern Sea Route in 2025, with 100 identified against 13 in 2024, according to a Bellona report described by gCaptain. They include 38 oil and product tankers and 13 LNG carriers. One tanker, Hyperion, sailed the route and then carried Russian naphtha to Venezuela. Bellona's Arctic adviser Ksenia Vakhrusheva said Rosatom, which operates the route, systematically restricts public information and has stopped publishing vessel positions and annual incident summaries.
