Venezuela uses spoofing tankers to keep oil flowing to Cuba, Reuters says
Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA has turned to dark fleet tankers to ship oil to Cuba, often through ship-to-ship transfers by vessels that spoof their location, Reuters reports. The Panama-flagged Neptune 6 was recently near Cuba's Nipe Bay transferring Venezuelan heavy crude and fuel oil to the Cuba-flagged Esperanza, while its transponder had shown a position north of Curaçao since late May. In June PDVSA began co-loading cargoes that deliver part of the oil in Cuban waters before continuing to Asia. Shipping documents, TankerTrackers.com, satellite imagery and LSEG data show Cuba receiving 27,000 barrels per day from Venezuela this year, down from 51,500 a year earlier.
