US sanctions Russia's Arctic LNG 2 export project
The United States on 2 November imposed sanctions on Arctic LNG 2, a large Siberian project built to export liquefied natural gas worldwide, as part of a package targeting hundreds of people and entities, Reuters reports. The measures also hit Russia's energy sector, sanctions evasion networks in Türkiye, the UAE and China, and suppliers of suicide drones. Novatek, Russia's largest LNG producer, said in September that shipments from the project would begin early in 2024. Reuters says the administration aims to curb Russian LNG shipments to Europe, which has banned only pipeline gas, but that it is unclear how much Russian LNG the measures will block.
