UK sanctions eight more ships in package aimed at Russia's revenues

The UK announced 31 new sanctions on 1 October, covering 23 individuals and entities and eight ships. According to the government, the vessels comprise three shadow fleet ships, two that supply them with bunker fuel and three Russian-owned ice-class vessels. It says Russia is trying to assemble a new shadow fleet to get round sanctions and keep earning from gas exports. It adds that the UK has now sanctioned nearly 600 tankers and that UK forces intercepted the shadow fleet vessel Smyrtos in June. Other designations cover alleged abuses against Ukrainian civilians and disinformation. Europe minister Lord Wood of Anfield said the UK was "targeting both the revenues" sustaining Russia's aggression and those responsible for crimes against civilians.
