US sanctions UAE-based shipowner Jugwinder Singh Brar and his tanker fleet
The US Treasury designated Jugwinder Singh Brar, an Indian national based in the UAE, whose shipping companies own a fleet of nearly 30 vessels that Treasury says largely operate in Iran's shadow fleet. Four companies in the UAE and India that own and operate the ships were also listed. According to Treasury, the vessels carry out risky ship-to-ship transfers of Iranian oil off Iraq, Iran, the UAE and in the Gulf of Oman, after which others blend the cargoes and falsify documents to hide their Iranian origin. Treasury called it the fifth round of Iran oil sanctions since February.
