UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force activates Nordic Warden to track shadow fleet ships

The ten-nation Joint Expeditionary Force has activated Nordic Warden, a UK-led system that uses AI to assess AIS and other data and flag risks from ships entering sensitive sea areas, the UK government announced on 6 January. Vessels identified as part of Russia's shadow fleet have been entered into the system so they can be watched as they approach 22 areas of interest, including parts of the English Channel, North Sea, Kattegat and Baltic. The government said the step followed the Christmas Day damage to the Estlink2 cable, which Finnish authorities suggest may have been caused by a shadow fleet tanker.
