Tankers forced out of Laconian Gulf again as Greek navy drills resume
Oil tankers have again been forced out of Greece's Laconian Gulf after the navy resumed exercises there on 20 May, Bloomberg reports. Ships briefly returned after a previous notice expired, but have now gathered in a gap between the gulf and a newly added exercise zone to the south. The latest notice runs until 3 June. According to Bloomberg, the Hellenic Navy Hydrographic Service declared zones that cover the tankers' preferred transfer spots, obstructing ship-to-ship transfers of Russian oil bound for Asian buyers. The agency describes the gulf, about 110 miles south-west of Athens, as a vital logistics area for the trade in Russian crude and fuel.
