Germany turns away sanctioned tanker Tavian from its Baltic waters

German federal police refused the tanker Tavian entry to territorial waters off Schleswig-Holstein on 10 January, gCaptain reported, after finding forged papers and a fabricated IMO number. Police used a helicopter to inspect the 27-year-old ship, which was flying what gCaptain called a false Cameroonian flag and is on US sanctions lists. The tanker turned back towards the Norwegian Sea. The Barents Observer reported that it later entered the Norwegian Barents Sea bound for Murmansk, and said its genuine identity was the Arcusat. gCaptain described the move as the first reported case of such a vessel being blocked outright.
