Sanctioned tankers in the Black Sea broadcast false positions, the Financial Times reports
The Financial Times reports, according to summaries published by Novaya Gazeta Europe and LB.ua, that at least 12 sanctioned tankers in the Black Sea have been transmitting false, fixed positions while actually sailing hundreds of kilometres away. Six of them reportedly appeared in two places at once. The Russian-flagged tanker Pirop reportedly signalled a position near the Bosphorus on 27 August while also reporting one off the Turkish coast about 800 km away. A University College London researcher cited by the FT said the ships appeared to use identical devices. Lloyd's List Intelligence linked the practice to Moscow's efforts to protect tankers from Ukrainian attacks. Eleven of the 12 ships reportedly switched to the Russian flag in the past year.
