India expected to keep buying Russian crude near current levels after Trump waiver, Indian media report

India is likely to keep importing Russian crude at close to current volumes after US President Donald Trump waived the sanctions and duties in the new Russia sanctions law, analysts expect, PTI reported on 17 October. The law had authorised tariffs of up to 100% on the largest buyers of Russian oil and gas, as well as sanctions on Russia's shadow fleet of tankers. According to ship-tracking data cited by PTI, India has taken about 1.8 million barrels a day of Russian seaborne crude this year, ahead of China at 1.2 million. Data provider Kpler expects October imports of about 1.8 to 1.9 million barrels a day, below June's peak of 2.6 million.
