EU plans to have Denmark check uninsured Russian oil tankers in its straits, FT reports
The EU is planning to instruct Denmark to inspect and possibly block tankers carrying Russian oil through its waters, European Pravda reports, citing the Financial Times. According to the FT's sources, Denmark would check ships without Western insurance under laws that let states inspect vessels they consider an environmental threat. Some 60% of Russia's seaborne oil exports leave via the Baltic and pass through the Danish straits. The report says the EU is also weighing sanctions on shipping firms that sell old tankers into Russia's shadow fleet and on countries that let them fly their flags. The US Treasury had earlier sent inquiries to 30 owners of about 100 vessels suspected of breaching the price cap.
