Zakharova says Russia will answer Japan's shipping sanctions in kind, Interfax reports

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on 5 October that Moscow would respond to Japan's latest sanctions with proportionate countermeasures, Interfax reports. According to the agency, she was commenting on measures Tokyo announced on 2 October against 33 Russian legal entities, nine individuals and several companies abroad, and said they were the first Japanese sanctions to include restrictions on shipping. Interfax reports that Zakharova accused Japan of disregarding international law and bilateral agreements, pointing to a 1957 trade agreement that she said guarantees ships and crews treatment no less favourable than that given to any third country. She said Russia's response would mainly target areas of interest to Japan.
