US sanctions nine tankers over Iranian oil, citing protest crackdown
The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control on 23 January designated nine vessels and eight companies it says transport Iranian oil and petroleum products. The ships include Sea Bird, Avon, Al Diab II, Cesaria, Longevity 7, Eastern Hero, Aqua Spirit, Chiron 5 and Keel, most flagged in Palau or Comoros, with owners and managers in the UAE, India, Oman, Seychelles, the Marshall Islands and Liberia. Treasury framed the action as a response to Iran's killing of protesters. Al Jazeera reported that US officials said the revenues fund proxies, weapons programmes and security services, amid widespread anti-government demonstrations in Iran.
