EU adopts sixth sanctions package with phased ban on Russian oil imports
The Council of the EU adopted a sixth sanctions package against Russia on 3 June, banning the purchase, import or transfer into the EU of Russian crude oil and certain petroleum products. The phase-out runs over six months for crude and eight months for refined products. A temporary exception covers pipeline crude for member states that depend heavily on Russian supplies and lack viable alternatives, while Bulgaria and Croatia receive temporary derogations for seaborne crude and vacuum gas oil respectively. The package also removes Sberbank and two other Russian banks from SWIFT. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the bloc was "banning the import of Russian oil into the EU".
