EU fifth sanctions package bars Russian-flagged vessels from its ports
The Council of the EU adopted a fifth package of sanctions against Russia on 8 April that prohibits access to EU ports for vessels registered under the Russian flag. Derogations apply to agricultural and food products, humanitarian aid and energy. The package also bans the purchase, import or transfer into the EU of Russian coal and other solid fossil fuels from August 2022, imports the Council valued at €8bn a year. Russian and Belarusian road hauliers are barred from carrying goods within the EU, four major Russian banks face a full transaction ban and new export bans cover jet fuel. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the measures followed atrocities by Russian forces in Bucha and elsewhere.
