First supertanker sent for scrap in two years is an Iran-trade dark ship

The Amor, a 24-year-old Cameroon-flagged supertanker, has become the first VLCC registered for demolition since late 2022 and is to be scrapped at Alang in India, Bloomberg reports. The ship appeared on a US Energy Information Administration list in October of vessels involved in exporting Iranian crude, though it had not been blacklisted, and it was detained in a Chinese port earlier in 2024 for deficiencies. Bloomberg says sanctions on individual dark-fleet ships, weaker Chinese demand and lower rates are pushing owners to scrap old tankers. "A clean-up of the aging fleet via scrappage is clearly due," said Vortexa's David Wech.
