Russian veto ends UN panel monitoring North Korea sanctions

Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on 28 March to renew the panel of experts that monitors sanctions on North Korea, ending its work, the Associated Press reports. The vote was 13 to one, with China abstaining. The panel's mandate had been renewed for 14 years and runs out on 30 April. Its experts had reported that North Korea continued to develop nuclear weapons and to import refined petroleum products in breach of council resolutions. Western governments accused Moscow of seeking to avoid scrutiny; the UK ambassador said the panel had been 'an inconvenience for Russia'.
