US Treasury sanctions 17 more tankers it ties to Iran's shadow fleet

The US Treasury sanctioned 17 tankers on 8 October as part of Operation Economic Outcast, saying the move neutralises the vast majority of Iran's remaining shadow fleet, which it accuses of carrying Iranian oil and petrochemicals to buyers in South and East Asia. The ships, among them Paritosh, Bitu, Starway and Gas Lucky, sail under the flags of 12 jurisdictions, including Panama, Comoros, Mongolia and San Marino. OFAC also designated 17 owning companies, mostly registered in the Marshall Islands, Hong Kong and China. Treasury removed two vessels, Hakuna Matata and Pinocchio, from its list after they left the fleet and were sold to non-sanctioned operators. Secretary Scott Bessent said no enabler of Iranian sanctions evasion was safe.
