Experts warn over dozens of tankers idling in Gulf of Finland
Between 30 and 40 tankers described as part of Russia's shadow fleet are waiting in the Gulf of Finland after Ukrainian drone strikes damaged oil terminals at Ust-Luga and Primorsk, The Moscow Times reported. The ships are gathered at informal anchorages in Russian waters and in the narrow international corridor between Finland and Estonia. Atlantic Council senior fellow Elisabeth Braw, Bellona analyst Ksenia Vakhrusheva and Estonian naval commander Ivo Värk were among those cited on the risks, including possible sabotage and pollution from ageing ships. Vakhrusheva said the old tankers "lack sufficient insurance" to pay for an oil spill clean-up.
