US seizes $2.8m of Cuba-bound biodiesel at Florida and Texas ports
US Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) announced in Miami on 7 October that more than 600,000 gallons of biodiesel, worth $2.8m, had been seized at ports in Florida and Texas, WLRN reports. Officials said the fuel was destined for ENETEC, a Cuban state-run wholesaler that Washington barred earlier this year from receiving such imports under its fuel restrictions on Cuba. Almost 500,000 gallons were seized at Port Everglades, and Port Houston was also cited as a departure point for the planned shipments. José Figueroa, HSI's agent in charge in Miami, described the scheme, stopped last month, as a deliberate and coordinated attempt to evade sanctions. HSI did not name the US individuals or companies said to have arranged the shipments.
