Greenpeace says slick from drone-hit tanker off Sochi covers about 25 sq km, Meduza reports
Greenpeace says an oil slick spread over about 25 square kilometres of the Black Sea after the Liberian-flagged Aframax tanker Rio was struck off Sochi on 6 October, Meduza reported on 14 October. The group believes the fire burned the ship's bunker fuel rather than its cargo, and on 9 October called the pollution serious but not catastrophic. It warned that the film on the water kills plankton and that heavier products may sink. Russian authorities take a different view: Rospotrebnadzor and Sochi's mayor said on 7 October that the fire had not polluted the sea, and regional responders said on 14 October that small amounts of oil products found ashore in Novorossiysk did not come from the tanker.
